OBSESSING: Your mind feels colonized
SYMPTOM
You can't stop thinking or talking about your ex and/or your relationship. It feels out of control. Your mind is stuck in a constant loop of conversations that happened or that you want to happen, or you're searching for hidden meaning in moments you think you missed at the time, or keep reinterpreting little details, questioning whether this was "what they really meant."
What's happening
You're desperately trying to make sense of something that probably never will.
Every conversation replays in your head. You imagine the ones you wish had happened. You search for hidden meaning in old texts, replay tiny moments, and wonder if you missed something that would explain everything.
It’s exhausting. And it can feel impossible to turn off.
Besides trying to make meaning, you are also dissociating, which numbs the pain and lets you avoid what you need to address so you can move on.
Why it feels so hard
Your brain is trying to solve a problem that may not have an answer.
But the more you chase certainty, the more trapped you become inside the loop.
Wasting hours of your life; creating massive anxiety when you can't "figure it out"; being trapped by the misguided belief that you can use your logic to defeat nervous system dysregulation, which unfortunately, ain't gonna work.
Because, surprise, this search party isn’t out for Clarity. This party is searching for Relief.
What this leads to
Rumination steals your attention from the life happening in front of you.
Hours disappear. Anxiety grows. You begin believing that if you could just figure it out, you’d finally feel better. But healing isn’t something you can think your way into.
What helps
The goal isn’t to stop your thoughts.
It’s to stop following them.
Recovery begins when you gently interrupt the loop, return to your body, and give your brain something new to practice.
Start here if you can't stop obsessing about your relationship
Day 7 of Rx Breakup is called Obsessing because this is one of the most common experiences after a breakup.
It offers a detailed explanation of how to break out of the loop and get back into your life. By staying present and embodied, you can interrupt this self-sabotaging pattern that is currently domming your mind, and driving your car.
